Countries In Europe and Their Capital Cities
Europe is a continent which comprises the western islands and land masses on the Eurasian Plate. All of the countries on the continent are located in the Northern Hemisphere with latitudes above 15 degrees north.
There are 44 countries in Europe – not to be confused with the European Union which is an economic and political union between European countries. The EU consists of 27 countries.
The population of Europe is around 750 million people making it the 3rd most populated continent behind Asia and Africa. The continent is very compact with flight times between the most northern and southern countries taking less than 6 hours. With very advanced transport links such as rail, bus and ferry routes, often planes are not needed to travel between countries.

The positions of some of these countries in the continent of Europe are often debated. For instance, Russia can be classed as being in both Asia and Europe and does not belong to one distinct category. You may find other sources that list countries as being in Europe but also belonging to Asia such as Turkey or Georgia, these are transcontinental countries and so can be placed in either continent.
